Are vision measurement and a medical eye examination the same?
No. Your prescription is one part of assessing vision. A medical eye examination also considers eye health; a dilated examination allows internal structures to be checked. Good vision alone does not rule out eye disease. [1]
How often should I have my eyes checked?
The schedule depends on age, health, family history and previous findings. Ask your ophthalmologist when to return. There is no single interval that suits everyone. [1]
Which changes should not wait for a routine appointment?
Sudden vision loss or blurring, new flashes, a sudden increase in floaters, a curtain-like shadow or pain need urgent medical assessment. Contact an ophthalmologist or emergency medical service; do not wait for an appointment simply to get new glasses. [2]

What should I bring to the optician?
Bring your current glasses and previous prescription or report if you have one. Note when and at what distance you have trouble seeing. If you use contact lenses, bring the packaging with its parameters and ask ahead about preparation.
