We offer sunglasses, tinted prescription lenses and photochromic lenses, also known locally as “photogrey”. Consider UV protection, tint, polarisation and prescription suitability as separate features when choosing.
UV protection: what to check
Look for a clear UV400 or 100% UVA and UVB protection label and the specification for the particular model. A dark tint alone does not prove UV protection.
Coverage and comfort
The size and fit of the frame affect how much light enters from the sides. Try glasses on: they should not slip or pinch. For children’s or sports eyewear, ask for specific advice about materials and protection. Source: AAO
Tinted and polarised lenses: what is the difference?
Tinted prescription lenses
These combine vision correction with a chosen tint. We check whether they can be made for your frame and prescription. Colour, darkness and UV specifications are agreed for each order.
Polarisation for less glare
A polarising filter reduces glare from surfaces such as water and roads. This is different from a UV filter. Ask whether your chosen option has both features and is available for your order. Source: AAO
How do photochromic lenses work?
Photochromic lenses change their darkness in response to light. Many designs react mainly to UV radiation: they darken outdoors and gradually clear indoors. The speed and level of darkening depend on the technology and temperature.
An important difference when driving
A windscreen blocks much of the UV radiation, so many standard photochromic lenses do not darken enough inside a car. Other technologies exist, so ask about the exact product. A separate pair of prescription sunglasses may be more practical for your driving. Source: Transitions
Style, material and magnetic sun clips
Aviator, round, geometric or cat-eye: shape is a personal choice, but the frame also needs to suit the lenses. For prescription sunglasses, frame size and curvature are part of the assessment.
We offer mineral glass and plastic spectacle lenses. Compare the advantages and limitations of each material, then check the available sunglass or photochromic specification in the shop.
A frame with a magnetic sun clip is another option. The attachment fits over a compatible prescription frame. Check the UV protection, fit and secure attachment of the particular clip.
What to ask before ordering
- Can this frame be made with my prescription?
- Which material, UV filter and tint level are included?
- Would polarised, photochromic or permanently tinted lenses suit my use?
- Are these lenses suitable for the activities I have in mind?
- What are the total price and delivery time?

Sunglasses and photochromic lenses: your questions
Do you make prescription sunglasses?
Yes. You can order tinted lenses for your prescription at Optika Rodenstock. We confirm the suitable frame, colour, material and delivery time in the shop.
Do darker lenses mean better UV protection?
No. Tint and UV protection are different properties. Look for UV400 or 100% UVA and UVB protection for the specific model.
Is polarisation the same as UV protection?
No. Polarisation reduces glare from certain surfaces, while a UV filter protects against ultraviolet radiation. Check the two specifications separately.
Do photochromic lenses darken in a car?
Many standard photochromic lenses do not darken sufficiently behind a windscreen. Performance depends on the technology; ask about the exact product if driving is your main use.
Does a magnetic clip fit every frame?
No. The clip must be compatible with the specific frame. You can try the available models in the shop and check their specifications.
How do I choose between photochromic lenses and separate sunglasses?
Tell us when and where you will wear them: walking, moving between indoors and outdoors, or driving. The choice depends on these habits, your prescription and the features of the available lenses.
